Jack Smith was everyone’s last hope.
In the months leading up to the presidential election, there was still enough room for a glimmer of optimism that Trump would at last face some consequences. Through all the progress and the setbacks of his criminal investigations, Smith seemed to remain quietly undaunted. Certainly someone who had withstood the insults, the public pressure, the threats would have another trick or two up his sleeve.
Smith, after all, had made his name prosecuting despots and war criminals in the International Criminal Court. Surely he would be able to put this third rate tin-pot dictator wannabe behind bars. And even if Smith didn’t prevail in all of the cases, there were so many crimes that his investigations were digging into that at least some of them would inevitably end with convictions.
Jack Smith became the white knight who would charge in on his prosecutorial steed to rescue our legal system and our democracy.
