Matt Gaetz, We Hardly Knew Ye
Wait. I take that back. We knew ye way too much and for too long. Please go away.
I’m going to keep this brief. Matt Gaetz is toast, at least as far as his appointment as Attorney General goes.
Gaetz was never remotely qualified to be the nation’s chief law enforcement officer. But for Trump appointees, qualifications don’t seem to matter. Unquestioning loyalty to Trump is the only real criterion.
I’ll leave it to the pundit class to dissect every possible reason why Gaetz removed himself from consideration. There are still so many details we don’t know (and may not want to know), but we can be pretty certain his departure has to do with his sexual exploits with underage girls, along with fact that he has virtually no friends in Congress — at least none that would go to the mat (no pun intended) for him.
I’m much more interested in the fact that this backing away — whether it was his own doing or if it was done at the behest of Trump — proves that Trump is not as invincible as many have characterized him of late. Trump is still subject to public pressure. His co…
